Who's teaching it

Who I am

I'm Robbie. I'm a physical therapist in Nashville.

I work in home health, so I'm not in a clinic. I'm in people's houses, 5 to 7 older adults every day. I see what they are actually struggling with in their own homes, getting to the kitchen, getting at their medications.

Hands kept coming up and nobody was doing anything about them. So I went looking online for good hand videos and couldn't find anything simple enough to actually help.

So I started making them.

Before you start

Questions I get asked

What if I can't do one of the movements?

Then you make it smaller. Move a shorter distance, use less pressure, and if you have a finger that does not like a movement, leave that finger out and do the rest with the others. Every movement has a gentler version, and I show you that version while we are doing it.

What if it hurts?

These are gentle on purpose. When I ask you to squeeze, it is 25 to 50% of what you have, not your hardest. If something is uncomfortable, you peel back and do a little less.

Sharp pain is a different thing, and it is not what this is for. If you have sharp pains you should see a doctor, and probably a physical therapist in person.

Do I need to be flexible or strong to start?

No. On day 1 all I ask is that you notice where your hands are today, and there are no wrong answers. Your bear claw might be wider than mine and your sandwich a little less sandwichy than mine. Whatever you can get, we work with that.

Do I need any equipment, or anything to log into?

No equipment, and nothing to log into. Day 1 comes to your email and you press play. Take your rings off before we start, and that is everything you need.

How long does each day take, and can I sit down?

About 7 minutes a day, for 3 days. You can do the whole thing sitting down.

What if I have a question, or something doesn't feel right?

Hit reply to the email and tell me. I read all of these. I spend a lot of time trying to help people with their hands, and hearing from you means the world to me.

Is this for a specific condition?

No. This is for hands that have gotten stiff and weak, and it does not matter if it has been 2 months or if you have noticed it for 30 years.

It is not for a specific condition and it is not for sharp pains. If that is you, you should see a doctor, and probably a physical therapist in person.

Ready to start?

3 days. About 7 minutes each.

More of what people have said

The 46 items below are screenshots of comments left on my hand videos on Instagram. In them, people describe their hands feeling looser and less stiff, especially in the morning; being able to open jars and lids, hold a cup, a pen or a spoon, and turn pages again; a stronger grip; and feeling more confident using their hands for everyday things. They are shown as pictures, so they are not read out one by one.
